People stand in ‘ring of fire’ as overnight sideshows take over several Bay Area streets

Overnight sideshows brought large crowds in several Bay Area cities early Saturday morning.

One sideshow happened just after midnight at the intersection of Lewis Brown and B.W. Williams Drives in Vallejo.

Video from the scene showed people standing in a ring of fire and cars doing donuts around them.

The Vallejo sideshow lasted about an hour. Other sideshows were reported across the Bay Area, including the Carquinez Bridge, Crockett, Richmond, and Oakland.

Richmond police told NBC Bay Area that they responded to a sideshow at the intersection of Klose Way and Blume Dr. at around 1:40 a.m. They added that their officers located about 50 vehicles. They were able to disperse the group and get them to leave the area without any arrests or citations.

Richmond police also responded to another sideshow at around 2:11 a.m. in the area of Harbour Way South and Cutting Boulevard. It involved 100 vehicles. Police said that during the second sideshow, officers attempted to disperse the group and stop a vehicle.

Police added that the vehicle drove at officers in an attempt to flee, prompting a short pursuit. Richmond police pursued the vehicle to Bay View Ave and Interstate 580, where it yielded to officers, and the driver was taken into custody without incident.

Police added that the driver was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and felony evading. He was booked into the RPD jail, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Oakland police told NBC Bay Area that they broke up the crowd in that city’s sideshow after 20 minutes. As of Saturday afternoon, there was no word of any arrests in the Oakland sideshow.

As police continue investigating, Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell said he is frustrated and angry about what happened.

“You know, you have 300, 400, 500 cars. I don’t care how large your police department is; it’s not going to be enough You’re going to have to have outside help, and I think there are things that need to be done legislatively as well I would love to see the penalty increase substantially,” he said.
