The heart-wrenching news of violence in Haiti has shattered the lives of Missouri politician Ben Baker and his family. Ben Baker, a dedicated Republican politician from the United States, received devastating news today that his beloved daughter, Natalie, and son-in-law, Davy, had been brutally killed in Haiti. The couple, who had devoted themselves to missionary work, tragically lost their lives together.
Ben Baker, unable to contain his grief, took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking news and express his emotions. “My heart is shattered into a thousand pieces,” he wrote. “Never before have I experienced such immense pain.” Baker’s daughter and her husband had committed themselves to a life of full-time missionary work in Haiti. Their lives were cut short when merciless gangs attacked them. “They have ascended to Heaven side by side,” Baker mournfully added.
The grief-stricken father appealed for prayers and strength for his devastated family. He pleaded, “Please pray for my family; we desperately need the strength to endure this unimaginable loss.” He also requested prayers for the Lloyd family, expressing his loss for words during this incomprehensible time.
The community responded to this heartbreaking news with an outpouring of condolences and shared sorrow on social media. Countless individuals expressed their condolences to the grieving family, offering their prayers and affection. Ben Baker’s difficult journey was shared by many, as one person expressed, “Oh Ben, my heart aches for you and your loved ones. There are no words to console such unfathomable grief.” Another offered comfort, saying, “I will continue to pray for all of you. Sending my deepest condolences.”
The Threat of Gangs in Haiti
Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, has been plagued by an alarming surge in gang violence since 2020. Rival criminal factions and their associates have engaged in a brutal gang war, leaving the city in turmoil. The Haitian government and security forces have struggled to maintain control, with reports suggesting that up to 200 gangs have seized control over 90% of the city.
Every day, the citizens of Port-au-Prince face a constant battle for survival amidst this violent chaos. The situation escalated in March 2021 when gangs launched attacks in an attempt to force acting prime minister Ariel Henry to step down. Their actions resulted in widespread violence throughout the city, including the storming of two prisons and the subsequent release of thousands of prisoners, fueling further turmoil.
As rival gang factions collaborated, carrying out coordinated attacks, an alarming number of people fell victim to the violence. Thousands lost their lives, while others endured the horrors of rape, burning, and kidnapping. The streets became a grim tableau of death and suffering.
The United States military swiftly evacuated embassy staff and worked to secure the safety of their personnel amidst this escalating crisis. Diplomatic missions, including personnel from the United States and the German ambassador, also evacuated from the capital. The Haitian government declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew to restore order. The resignation of acting prime minister Ariel Henry, once a transitional government was established, marked a small step towards stability.
However, even with these efforts, the menacing figure of infamous warlord Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier continues to strike fear into the hearts of the Haitian people. Known for his brutal tactics, including setting his victims on fire, Cherizier leads G9, the most dangerous gang group in the capital. The impoverished areas of the city remain terrorized by his reign of terror.
As we reflect on this heartbreaking tragedy, we must stand together in support of Ben Baker and his family, offering prayers, strength, and solace during this unthinkable loss. Haiti faces immense challenges, and it is our hope that peace and security will soon prevail, bringing an end to the suffering endured by its people.
